The power of Jiffy Growblocks
The all-in-one medium and container: the Jiffy Growblock is the number one choice for all cut-flower and vegetable growers using hydroponic systems, greenhouses or other nursery applications. And thanks to air-pruning, better temperature control, and versatility, Jiffy Growblocks create healthier, stronger plants in many greenhouses around the world.
PLA-netting
Reducing the use of plastic in packaging and production is a global issue, and at Jiffy we aim to lower the use of plastics for our growing media. Since 2014, Jiffy has switched from PE and PP plastics to PLA netting for the manufacturing of all Jiffy Growblocks and Jiffy Pellets. All Jiffy Growblocks now use PLA netting. This is made from polylactic acid (PLA) an alternative to plastic, based on corn starch. PLA netting is a lightweight, fine-fibre web which is biodegradable and compostable under controlled industrial conditions. It is certified under EU norm EN13432. Jiffy cares for the environment and we are striving to help our customers grow their products in a sustainable or renewable way.
Product Certifications
To guarantee the high quality standard of our products, we certify our product portfolio for organic use, biodegradability, quality, uniformity, etc. This way we help you to meet the requirements your products need in the field for organic production, sustainability, biodegradability and quality.
Jiffy Growblock
Jiffy Growblocks contains 100% RHP Certified coco substrate and is delivered to your greenhouse as a dry plate enclosed in netting. This is highly efficient for both transportation and storage. When water is added, the plate swells into a block, ready to propagate or cultivate your plants and contained by the netting to keep the medium together and the greenhouse clean. Growblocks can be ordered in a wide range of sizes, with or without seedling holes depending on your specific needs.
The purified, stabilized coco substrate is carefully selected at our own Jiffy production site to give a maximum Water Holding Capacity of 60-75%. Air-filled porosity of 20-35% ensures optimum oxygen diffusion rates in the root zone. The production process of the Jiffy Growblock allows growers to adapt any fertilizer application with a range of EC and pH levels. Coco substrate is a renewable, environmentally-friendly substrate with zero disposal issues and the netting is made of PLA. Jiffy Growblocks work perfectly in combination with Jiffy Growbags.

Bump-up
Professional nursery propagators and bedding plant growers can all save time and money with Jiffy Bump-Up blocks. The growblock contain Jiffy’s own-manufactured 100% RHP certified coco substrate and are delivered dry and compressed to save on transport and storage logistics. Specifically designed to bump-up three or more cuttings in one single step, Jiffy Bump-Up can directly result in a possible labor saving of up to 27%. The Bump-Up growblock itself consists of a medium-and-container block, ideal for nursery propagators to transplant softwood cuttings which can later be bumped up to a larger container. Bedding plant growers can plant three or more cuttings in a Bump-Up and later transplant multiple plants to a final location such as flowerbed, patio container or hanging baskets in one single move.

-
What is a Growblock exactly?
A limited volume of (non soil) growing media to propagate a seedling into a healthy young plant before transplanting into hydroponics or soil.
-
Is a Jiffy Growblock like a stonewool grow block?
No. The Jiffy Growblock is made of 100% coir, an organic substance derived from coconut husks, where a stonewool grow block is made of inert basalt.
-
Does a Jiffy Growblock have the same characteristics as a stonewool grow block?
No. The organic structure in the Jiffy Growblock acts like a sponge. It both buffers water and nutrients. Inert media do not buffer anything. Water and nutrients will sink down through the stonewool grow block with gravity.
-
Why use a Jiffy Growblock?
The Jiffy Growblock has been proven to be THE propagation cube. Its characteristics create root development like no other. Faster root growth, stronger young plants and more balanced crops! These advantages even continue after transplantation.
-
What about Jiffy Growblock’s water holding capacity?
As the Growblock is made of 100% coir we can state that at full water saturation level the Growblock still contains 25 Vol% of air, depending on the mix, the rest is filled up with water and coir particles. So, its water holding capacity is 70 Vol%.
-
Can Jiffy Growblocks being used in (semi) mechanized propagation greenhouses?
Yes. The blocks and its netting have been adapted for use in any mechanized system. The blocks have been successfully tested in the most common systems.
-
Does a Jiffy Growblock contain nutrients?
Yes. All Jiffy Growblocks contain a specially prepared balanced amount of nutrients. This helps the young plants in their first days. As the amount is limited you should start adding extra nutrients after 7 – 10 days. Ask your Jiffy advisor.
-
What is extra washed coir?
Usually, coconut husks have been soaked in (brackish) water to soften the tissue. The main purpose for this treatment is to harvest the coconut fibres. The coir pith is usually a left over from these fibre mills. It contains big amounts of mineral salts. Depending on the area and the water used for soaking this can be high in Sodium (Na+). With extra washing, we can diminish the levels of mineral salts in the coir pith.
-
What is buffered coir?
Jiffy supplies not only extra washed coir, but also buffered coir.
As the coir pith not only contains mineral salts in its pores, it also contains fixed ions on its organic structure (so called coir complex). Usually with coir pith these are K+ and Na+. With an extra treatment we bring in Calcium (Ca2+). The Ca2+-ions exchange with the K+ and Na+-ions. By doing so the coir complex will stay neutral (chemically speaking). This process is crucial to avoid calcium deficiency at the beginning of the culture at first use. The reason: the exchange of calcium for the other ions will always happen, as calcium is attracted to the coir complex more than the other nutrients (+-ions).
-
What is the added value of RHP?
RHP is a certifying organization for growing media.
The certificate describes the chemical, physical and phytosanitary characteristics of growing media in close cooperation with the horticultural business’s demands. RHP-certified growing media are absolutely safe to be used for any horticultural crop. It does not really describe the process of production (like ISO***) but more the quality aspects of the certified products. Jiffy is the only supplier of RHP-certified coir Growblocks. The entire process from harvesting raw materials to supplying Jiffy Growblocks to the end users is controlled by independent certified organizations to safeguard the RHP-certificate.
