  • What is a growbag exactly?

A limited volume of (non soil) growing media to support a crop with the aim to be a source of water and nutrients for maximum growth.

  • Is a Jiffy Growbag like a stonewool growbag?

No. The Jiffy growbag is made of 100% coir. An organic substance derived from coconut husks, where a stonewool growbag is made of inert basalt.

  • Does a Jiffy Growbag have the same characteristics as a stonewool growbag?

No. The organic structure in the Jiffy Growbag acts like a sponge. It both buffers water and nutrients. Inert media do not buffer anything. Water and nutrients will sink down through the stonewool growbag with gravity.

  • Is there only 1 unique Jiffy Growbag?

No. we do have standard mixes, meeting the most common crop – climate – combinations and a few crop specific mixes. Ask your Jiffy advisor.

  • What about Jiffy Growbag’s water holding capacity?

As the Growbag is made of 100% coir we can state that at full water saturation level the Growbag still contains 25-45Vol% of air, depending on the mix, the rest is filled up with water and coir particles. So, its water holding capacity ranges form 50-70Vol%.

  • What is the biggest advantage of a Jiffy Growbag for a plant?

Coir like no other, known to be the best growing media for root development.

  • Does a Jiffy Growbag contain nutrients?

No. As the growbags need to be expanded before use, we prefer to suppply the growbags without extra added fertilizers. These can be supplied while expanding the growbags on site before use.

  • What is extra washed coir?

Usually, coconut husks have been soaked in (Brackish) water to soften the tissue. The main purpose for this treatment is to harvest the coconut fibers. the coir pith is usually a left over from these fibre mills. It contains big amounts of mineral salts. Depending on the area and the water used for soaking this can be high in Soidum (NA+) With extra washing, we can diminish the levels of mineral salts in the coir pith.

  • What is buffered coir?

Jiffy supplies not only extra washed coir, but also buffered coir. As the coir pith not only contains mineral salts in its pores, it also contains fixed ions on its organic structure (so called coir complex).

Usually with coir pith these are K+ and Na+. With an extra treatment we bring in Calcium (Ca2+). The Ca2+-ions exchange with the K+ and Na+-ions. By doing so the coir complex will stay neutral (chemically speaking).

This process is crucial to avoid calcium deficiency at the beginning of the culture at first use. The reason: the exchange of calcium for the other irons will always happen, as calcium is attracted to the coir complex more than the other nutrients (+-ions).

  • What is the added value of RHP?

RHP is a certifying organization for growing media. The certificate describes the chemical, physical and phytosanitary characteristics of growing media in close cooperation with the horticultural business’s demands. RHP-certified growing media are absolutely safe to be used for any horticultural crop. It does not really describe the process of production (like ISO***) but more the quality aspects of the certified products. Jiffy is the only supplier of RHP-certified coir growbags. The entire process from harvesting raw materials to supplying Jiffy Growbags to the end users is controlled by independent certified organizations to safeguard the RHP-certificate.
