1Plant is the world’s first substrate facility to gain this food safety management certification.
Fully certified since August 2021
Jiffy Group, a global leader in the growing media sector, today announced that its 1Plant production plant is now fully certified for food safety management. 1Plant, Jiffy’s flagship substrate facility, gained ISO 22000:2018 certification in August 2021. It is the first substrate facility ever to achieve this feat.
Meeting the needs of agri-food customers
Substrate itself is not food, of course. However, it is used to grow much of the produce we eat. That makes food safety a crucial factor, especially for raw fruit and vegetables like berries, salad greens and potted herbs.
1Plant ships 650,000 m3 of substrate to growers worldwide every year from its location in Zwijndrecht, the Netherlands. Many of its customers are in the agri-food industry.
Protecting consumers
1Plant produces dozens of specialized Jiffy Substrates. These solutions are the preferred choice of growers thanks to Jiffy’s consistently high standards and expert advice.
The new certification is proof that 1Plant is doing its utmost to protect consumers from a wide range of chemical, biological and physical contaminants, including plastics, vermin, and pathogens.
World’s most stringent standards
ISO 22000:2018 is the world’s most stringent food safety certification. It is sought after by top businesses throughout the food chain. Becoming certified means 1Plant demonstrably meets its tough standards.
To comply with ISO 22000:2018’s requirements, Jiffy evaluated all of 1Plant’s production, storage, and transportation processes for potential hazards. A new management system now monitors all identified risks to raw materials and products.
Providing peace of mind

Jiffy’s production facilities in Denmark and Sri Lanka are already ISO 22000:2018 certified. Its remaining locations are all to be certified by 2023.

1Plant is an ultra-modern factory for mixing substrates/potting soils. Opened in 2016, it manufactures products that follow Jiffy’s core values: quality, control, sustainability, and innovation. Next to the new ISO 22000:2018 food safety management certification, the plant is ISO 9001 certified for quality, and ISO 14001 for environmental systems. Its strategic location enables efficient transportation of raw materials and finished products by boat. This means it can supply the best substrates to even the most remote locations worldwide.
