As the largest young plant propagator in China, Shanghai Yuanyi Seedling Co. produces an impressive 400 million plants each year. For over ten years, Jiffy has supported their expansive operations with our reliable TPS (Tray Plugs System) substrates. “We chose Jiffy because of the stability in its product quality,” says Song Lei, Yuanyi Chief of Production.
Working together
Shanghai Yuanyi was the first Chinese grower to work with Jiffy. Recognized for its high-tech greenhouse operation specializing in the propagation of young bedding plants, their Chongming nursery alone grows over 200 varieties, with colors exceeding 1,000. Given that they produce up to 4 million plants daily during peak season, consistency and reliability are their number one priority when it comes to substrates.
Yuanyi undertook a comprehensive two-year trial to evaluate the performance of our TPS substrates in their greenhouses supported by Jiffy distributor, Shanghai Zhiyou. The trial involved assessing seasonal effects and tray specifications for various plant varieties. Ultimately, TPS Fine Plus Substrate emerged as the ideal solution for Yuanyi's needs, with its support of young bedding plants in a high-tech environment.
“Any deviation in substrates can result in significant losses,” Song Lei explains. “With Jiffy, we’ve never had an issue in the entire decade.”
A stable Substrate
TPS Fine Plus provides a tailored solution for Yuanyi’s young plant propagation needs. Produced at Jiffy facility in Estonia, these substrates combine premium materials like white and black peat, block peat, and coconut coir. The unique particle size of 3 to 10 mm, which distinguishes TPS Fine Plus from our standard TPS Substrate, is specifically designed to enhance water retention and aeration, fostering rapid root growth.
While TPS substrates are suitable for a variety of crops and general propagation needs, TPS Fine Plus is specially formulated for sensitive young plants that require precise control. The finer texture allows for faster wet-dry cycles, making it particularly effective in high-tech greenhouses.
Enriched with Tref Base Fertilizer (TBF), both TPS Fine Plus and our other substrate mixes ensure plant health by delivering optimal levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) and trace elements. This meticulous formulation helps Yuanyi achieve minimal losses in its young bedding plants.

- Consistent quality, especially important during peak production seasons when Yuanyi manages up to 5 million plants a day

Smooth sailing
Jiffy has always been committed to providing customer service. “Their Sales Team regularly visits and promptly answers any technical questions we have,” says Song Lei. To further improve Yuanyi’s production, we also collaborated on developing a perlite-enhanced substrate. While it was effective, it didn’t align with their budget. Nonetheless, through ongoing guidance and prompt assistance, we continue to ensure Yuanyi’s operations run smoothly.
