Jiffy to Share and Demonstrate CEA Solutions at OFVC 2024
Jiffy Group is excited to meet with Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), and fruit and vegetable growers at the 2024 Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention (OFVC), 21-22 February, 2024, at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada at Booth 1108.
Jiffy’s technical experts will be on-site to demonstrate and discuss our innovative and valuable CEA industry solutions.
Growblocks and Growbags nurture fruit and vegetable plants from root to shoot
At OFVC, see for yourself how Jiffy’s certified coco Growblocks and Growbags are ideal substrates for CEA, production of strawberries and high-wire crops such as bell peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
Jiffy Growblocks provide quick, strong, rooting and overall health in young fruit and fruiting vegetable plants. Growers can seamlessly transplant from Jiffy Growblocks to Jiffy Growbags.
Growblocks and Growbags are produced from spongy coconut husk tissues. Easily rewettable, stable when fully aged, and exhibiting high air contents, both solutions are renowned for their quality, consistency, and uniformity.
With Jiffy Growbags, growers can adjust air and water ratios as needed by selecting between multiple expertly designed options: High Yield, 100% Husk Chip, 50/50, and 70/30.
These solutions stand out from stonewool products in some key ways:
- In contrast to Growblocks and Growbags, stonewool can limit root health and growth because of its relatively low buffering capacity, or inefficiency in the uptake of water and nutrients.
- All Growblocks have pH values below 6.2, while all growbags have values of 7.0 at the highest. Compare these to a stonewool medium’s typical 7.0+% pH, which requires growers to reduce and closely monitor pH through their nutrient solutions.
- Using Growblocks and Growbags together in the production cycle, growers experience less stress on plant roots than if they switch completely from one medium to another (for example, from stonewool to coir).
Jiffy Growblocks and Jiffy Growbags are also third-party certified—available as OMRI Listed options and produced in facilities that meet the standards of RHP and ISO 9001, 14001, 22000, and 45001.
Pellets and Preforma enhance lettuce and young plant production
At OFVC, greenhouse growers and vertical farmers producing lettuce and young plants can learn how Jiffy Pellets and Jiffy Preforma can improve their operations.
Both solutions are well-suited for seed, cutting, and tissue culture propagation of tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and strawberries, as well as all lettuce production. Crucially, the products withstand manual handling and most automated processes.
Jiffy Pellets include a substrate, an open wall, and a biodegradable, compostable polylactic acid net. Shipped as dry, highly compressed disks, pellets take up little space in storage, then expand when watered.
Pellets are available with substrates made of 100% peat, 100% RHP-certified coconut coir, or a mix. Parameters such as expanded size, bulk density, pH, and EC vary depending on your selection of pellet to meet your operation’s needs. If space is a concern in your vertical farm or greenhouse, you can opt for a smaller pellet.
The Jiffy Preforma plant plug system consists of a custom substrate blend of coir or peat, as well as a binder and a tray.
With a porosity of 30% or more, Preforma plugs absorb and release moisture in a controlled released way and do not become compacted. This makes them ideal for low-water hydroponic operations that are focused on enhancing margins while limiting natural resource use.
Additionally, Preforma comes with dibbles included, and various dibble options are available so you can streamline seed and seedling placement.
The big picture
Ultimately, any Jiffy products can be used for any CEA crop or types of fruits or vegetables. For example, Growblocks have proven effective in lettuce production in NFT and ebb and flow systems, and our Jiffy Pots, Pellets, and Preforma cater to vegetable propagation.
