How Jiffy Group is reducing its emissions by 25%

Ambitious target

At the start of 2021, Jiffy Group announced an ambitious target to reduce its global CO2 emissions from production processes and logistics: 25% by the end of 2025.

We made a strong start in 2021, avoiding over 1,700 tons of emissions. The equivalent of more than 2,000 economy flights from London to New York.

To get there, Jiffy – growing to become the innovation and service leader in sustainable plant growing solutions – is exploring opportunities to generate renewable electricity at its production locations. Where that isn’t feasible, it finds suppliers of ‘clean’ electricity.

For instance, Jiffy’s 1Plant substrate and Preforma factories in the Netherlands aren’t suitable for generating onsite renewable energy. That’s why both locations have converted to buying 100% sustainable wind power. This will reduce emissions by 1,100 tons of CO2 a year (compared to 2020).

Switching equipment to biodiesel

Jiffy’s global production and harvesting activities consume over one million liters of fuel oil, emitting more than 2,700 tons of CO2 eachyear. The global project to convert equipment to biodiesel is already seeing results. For instance, Jiffy Sweden has already converted its peat harvesting equipment, reducing its annual CO2 emissions by 240 tons.

Not just CO2

Biodiesel significantly reduces emissions that are harmful to both the environment and humans:

  • Carbon dioxide reduced by up to 90%
  • Nitrogen oxides reduced by up to 27%
  • Particulate matter reduced by up to 84%

These and other actions already agreed and implemented will avoid more than 3,500 tons of CO2 emissions in 2022. Great progress towards Jiffy’s ambitious 25% emission avoidance target!

The logistics market continues to be extremely volatile, meaning it has not been possible to achieve reductions in this area yet. Jiffy will start work on this important part of its emissions strategy in the first half of 2022.

Let’s work together

Jiffy is a leading global supplier of growing media. We aim to serve you, its customers in plant propagation and cultivation, to achieve better results. We can do this together by continually improving, innovating, and working towards its common goals based on facts, teamwork, and involvement. Let’s develop sustainable plant growing solutions together: starting today! Globally, Jiffy continues to explore renewable energy, sustainable fuels, and direct emission reductions, so further steps are expected in 2022.
