Tomato production is one of the most important agricultural activities in the world, with strong demand from the food industry and households.
One of the key stages in tomato production is seed germination. Although this process may seem straightforward, there are a number of factors that can affect the success of germination, particularly in the case of tomatoes.
In this article, we'll explore the steps needed to germinate tomato seeds successfully in greenhouse or hydroponic production systems.
Whether you're an experienced grower or new to tomato production, this article will provide you with valuable information to help you germinate your tomato seeds successfully.
Let's get started!
Substrates for tomatoes
The success of tomato seed germination depends, to a large extent, on the choice of substrate. In greenhouse or hydroponic production systems, the right substrates are essential. In this section, we'll look at how Jiffy products, such as Growbags and Growblocks, can optimize this process.
Jiffy Growbags and Growblocks: effective solutions
Jiffy Growbags
These are bags or containers of pressed substrate that balance water retention and drainage. Ideal for tomatoes, these products ensure a constant supply of moisture and easy rehydration, avoiding harmful waterlogging and stimulating greater productivity
Jiffy has the widest range of Growbags to ensure you get the best solution for your crop. There are two sizes of Jiffy Growbags: Regular and EasyFill. They can be filled with our standard Jiffy Essence substrate or our premium Jiffy Finesse substrate.
- Jiffy Finesse is our premium range. Thanks to our RHP-certified production process, Jiffy Finesse Growbags guarantee low sodium and chloride levels and are ready to use. Ideal for sweet peppers, sweet fruit grown in high-tech growing systems and other demanding crops.
- Jiffy Essence Growbags are the perfect choice for those on a tight budget. They are delivered ready to be rinsed and processed by the user. ISO-certified, OMRI listed and suitable for USDA certified organic produce. Recommended for tomatoes, cut flowers, etc.
Why choose Jiffy Growbags?
- The ideal proportion of water and air for strong root development. This means fewer diseases, higher yields and up to 90% water savings,
- 100% coconut fiber: a renewable raw material with no disposal problems,
- Wide range, guaranteeing the perfect combination for your crop,
- High-quality, standardized and easy-to-use products,
- ISO-certified and OMRI-listed options,
- Dehydrated and compressed for easy transport and storage,
- Expert advice and after-sales service.
Jiffy Growblocks
Compact coconut blocks that expand with water, they are perfect for tomato seedlings before transplanting. They provide support for the roots and make transplanting easier, reducing stress on the seedlings.
Why choose Jiffy Growlocks?
- Success rates close to 100 %,
- Rapid development of strong roots,
- Excellent capillarity,
- For overload, ebb and flow, etc,
- Durable: 100% high-quality coir fibre,
- Naturally resistant to disease,
- Manufactured in ISO 22000 food safety certified factories,
- Efficient storage, use, and disposal.
How do I germinate tomato seeds step by step?
Here are the necessary steps:
1. Seed selection
Select high-quality tomato seeds, preferably from disease-resistant varieties adapted to local conditions. Make sure the seeds are fresh and have not been stored for a long time.
2. Preparing the germination substrate
Germinate tomato seeds in a phytosanitary medium suitable for plants of excellent quality. It is possible to germinate in peat trays as traditionally done, however we recommend the use of our propagation media to guarantee the total safety of the substrate.
3. Sowing the seeds
Place the tomato seeds directly into the Jiffy Growblocks, at a depth of around 1 cm. You can also use Jiffy Preforma, Jiffy Pellets or peat trays to germinate the seeds. Once the seeds start to germinate, you can transfer the seedlings directly to the Jiffy Growbags, without removing them from the Growblock, Preforma, or Pellet. This combination ensures a smooth transition. gentle and efficient, providing the perfect environment for plant development.
4. Provide the right conditions
Once the tomato has germinated, it must be planted in the Growbag, between 30 and 45 days after placing the seed, depending on the size of the plant we want to plant. Our Growbags come dry, compressed and lightweight, allowing for much more economical logistical handling and guaranteeing the safety and homogeneity of 100% of the substrate.
5. Seedling care
Before transferring the seedlings to the Growbags, they must be adequately hydrated, adding water. For certain final mixes, it is essential to ensure that they are well treated with extra water and fertilizers before use. This preparation helps stabilize the pH and chloride level (CL).
Drip irrigation should be managed, guaranteeing between 13 and 25 pulses per day depending on weather conditions, using a fertilized solution.
The Jiffy Growbags come with regulated pH and electrical conductivity, so once fertilization has begun, these indicators should be checked by measuring the drainage water.
Once the seeds have germinated, make sure to keep the substrate moist and avoid excess water.
Tomato propagation and production
In short, the choice of substrate is vital for growing tomatoes. Jiffy Growbags and Growblocks provide the optimum environment for the success of your tomatoes. Whether you're an expert or a beginner, consider these products to maximize your harvest in greenhouses or hydroponic systems. Start growing tomatoes successfully!
