Earth Overshoot Day 2026 falls on July 30, marking the date when humanity has used more natural resources than the planet can regenerate in one year. For the remaining 154 days of the year, global consumption will exceed what Earth can renew.

Why Earth Overshoot Day matters
Earth Overshoot Day helps show the gap between what people consume and what nature can regenerate. The earlier the date falls, the more pressure is placed on future resources.
In just over 50 years, global consumption has increased to the point where humanity now uses the equivalent of 1.75 Earths each year. The effects of this pressure are visible around the world, from climate-related droughts, floods and forest fires to biodiversity loss and increasing instability in the ecosystems that support food production, building materials, medicines and other essential resources.
Reducing resource demand through efficiency and circularity
Reducing pressure on the planet’s resources requires action across every part of the value chain, from the energy we use to the materials we choose.
Energy is one area where practical improvements can make a measurable difference. Decarbonizing electricity systems and improving energy efficiency with existing technology could move Earth Overshoot Day back by as much as 21 days. At Jiffy, we are taking steps in this direction. Over the past five years, we have increased renewable electricity use across our production locations to 22%. At our factories in Sri Lanka, installed solar panels now produce 1.3 million kWh of clean electricity each year.
Material choices also play an important role. Using recycled and bio-based raw materials helps reduce demand for virgin resources while giving value to materials that may otherwise become waste. Plastic remains an important focus area. With an estimated 22 tons of plastic entering the oceans every minute, plastics need to be treated as valuable, recyclable materials. Jiffy has already converted 28% of virgin fossil plastics to post-consumer recycled or bio-based plastics, and we are working toward 50%.
Together, these efforts support Jiffy’s broader sustainability goals: reducing emissions, improving production efficiency, supporting circularity, and lowering the environmental impact of our products and operations.
Developing lower-impact raw materials
Raw materials are central to both plant performance and environmental impact. That is why Jiffy continues to develop innovative materials made from the by-products of other industries, helping give these materials a second life.
One example is Jiffy CanePith, made from sugar cane waste, which is being launched in European substrate products this year, and the Jiffy Gel, made from sustainable, plant-based materials, supporting environmentally responsible growing practices.
By developing lower-impact alternatives and bringing renewable materials into practical use, Jiffy aims to support growers with solutions that combine performance, efficiency and reduced resource demand.
Jiffy is also working to reduce production waste and increase the amount of unavoidable waste that can be recycled.
Local improvements in waste reduction, recycling and more efficient production processes all contribute to Jiffy’s wider sustainability approach. These practical steps help reduce resource loss and support continuous improvement across our operations.
Managing cooling equipment responsibly
Fluorinated gases used in refrigeration and air conditioning can have a significant climate impact when leaks occur. Project Drawdown scenarios estimate that improved management of these gases could help move Earth Overshoot Day back by six days by 2050.
Jiffy is actively monitoring cooling equipment and has taken steps to reduce leaks and switch to gases with lower global warming potential.
