Our five-year sustainability plan
As Jiffy nears the conclusion of its five-year sustainability plan, the 2024 Sustainability Report provides overview of our progress so far. Over the past five years, we have worked to build a more responsible organization worldwide, guided by clear goals, sound governance, and a shared commitment to ongoing growth.
This report provides a comprehensive look at our progress toward Jiffy’s four core sustainability goals:
- Obtain 50% of total raw materials from sustainable sources
- Reduce single-use fossil plastics by 50%
- Increase our contribution to the circular economy
- Reduce production greenhouse gas emissions by 25%
Alongside these targets, independent certifications and rigorous internal systems continue to ensure transparency and accountability across all operations.

Strengthening our sustainability foundation
In 2024, Jiffy built on our existing sustainability targets while expanding our understanding of impacts across the business and value chain. For the first time, we mapped Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for all group operations, helping us understand indirect emissions in our value chain and laying the groundwork for future reduction targets.
We also took important steps toward ESG reporting and prepared for the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), enhancing visibility of key environmental, social, and governance metrics.
Responsible raw materials
Peat remains a core raw material, and Jiffy is committed to sustainable sourcing while developing low-carbon alternatives:
- European peat: 94% of our peat bogs are RPP certified; 89% of peat used in 2024 came from RPP-certified sources.
- Canadian peat: 77% Veriflora certified, up from 21% in 2023.
- Peat-free plugs: Up to 100% sustainable raw materials and 35% lower carbon footprint.
- Bagasse fibre (India) and wood fiber (Canada): New sustainable substrate options for global markets.
Our Innovation Center continues to test new materials for biodegradability, compostability, and plant performance, ensuring sustainable innovation without compromising quality.
Energy, emissions & circularity
We continue to reduce energy use, emissions, and material waste:
- Sri Lanka solar panels: 100% rooftop coverage, producing 1.3 million kWh and supplying up to 70% of daytime electricity.
- European car fleet: 36% plug-in hybrid or fully electric.
- Plastic reduction: Growbags now contain 20% PCR, with a 40% content successfully reached this year. Preforma pallet sheets contain 50% PCR in Europe and 20% in the USA. PLA nets for Jiffy-7 and Growblocks are fully renewable and biodegradable.
- Waste and water management: Production waste monitored and improved; 60% of pot production water is recycled.
Despite challenges with PCR availability, we continue to prioritize post-consumer recycled plastics and circular practices, including pallet reuse and repairs.
Water stewardship & biodiversity
We completed our first global water stress and biodiversity assessments:
- Three locations were medium-high risk, one extremely high.
- Measures already in place include rainwater capture, water reuse, and strategic facility placement.
- Peat extraction avoids protected and high-conservation areas, and land restoration practices are applied consistently.
These assessments help us safeguard ecosystems and plan for sustainable operations over the long term.
People, communities & governance
Sustainability goes beyond environmental impact. In 2024, Jiffy:
- Strengthened employee engagement, celebrating International Women’s Day and supporting workplace equality.
- Hosted Global Care Day events in Sri Lanka and Canada, contributing to local communities through volunteering and improvements.
- Implemented a supplier compliance program covering human rights, labor conditions, and environmental performance, including frequent audits of coir suppliers in Sri Lanka and India.
- Maintained rigorous certifications (ISO 9001, 14001, 22000, 45001, RHP, RPP, Veriflora) to ensure quality, safety, and responsible operations.
Looking ahead
2024 strengthened the foundation for Jiffy’s next five-year sustainability journey. By improving our emissions insights, expanding sustainable raw materials, and continuing responsible peat use, we are preparing to set even more ambitious targets beyond 2025.
