As a grower, you have some requirements and many choices. Your decision of crop, how you propagate or cultivate it, and your growing environment are just some of the factors that determine important outcomes—flower or fruit yield, crop loss prevention, and cost savings among them.
At Jiffy Group, we strive to help make things as simple as possible for growers. Our product offerings, such as substrates, can improve your plants’ rooting, water retention, nutrition, yields, and more.
So, whether you’re growing ornamentals or vegetables, fruits or trees, you can rely on Jiffy substrates. Our fill mixes are tailored and tested to meet specifications of individual crops. Further, you can choose between peat-reduced, peat-free, organic certified, coir, and traditional peat blends.
Let’s take a look at a couple of our substrate solutions for North American growers: European substrates and Flexistart.
European substrates arrive in the Western Hemisphere
Jiffy Group has brought its European substrates to the North American market. Our range of European substrates includes specialist mixes for annuals, potted plants, vegetables, soft fruits, and more.
We control the production of our own high-quality raw materials, including the sourcing of third-party inputs.
European peat is harvested in milled peat and block harvested fractions, as well as longer fiber types, offering a uniform combination of air and water within all pot sizes and crop types. Because of European peat’s characteristics and Jiffy’s manufacturing, this substrate allows growers to irrigate less frequently.
In addition to peat, we source coco product, clay, perlite, vermiculite, and wood fiber from Europe.
Our substrates are harvested and processed at two state-of-the-art European manufacturing sites.
- At Jiffy’s 1Plant factory in Zwijndrecht, Netherlands, we utilize advanced sifting, mixing, and processing methods and take advantage of our strategic location to efficiently transport substrates by vessel.
- We supply Baltic peat mixes year-round from the Treffex facility in Pärnumaa, Estonia, where our white and black peat screening lines produce uniform, first-rate substrates.
Our TPS peat substrate mixes from the Treffex facility in Estonia can be used for a variety of crops. TPS mixes range from fine to coarse and are available in blends of white and black peat, block peat, and coir coconut pith. Comprised of Tref Base Fertilizer with the macronutrients of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, plus trace elements, TPS ensures healthy plant growth.
Jiffy-Mix substrate mixes includes block-cut European peat blends, longer-fibered grains of Canadian peat, and coir coconut pith certified by the non-profit foundation RHP. Jiffy-Mix works well for germinating seeds and establishing unrooted cuttings, while Jiffy-Mix Plus is best for transplanting vegetables and rooted cuttings.
Helping enrich your grow
Flexistart is an enriched substrate that transforms a loose fill mix into a self-adhering plug simply by adding water and compression.
Flexistart reduces waste and saves labor in the production of vegetables, ornamentals and other crops. Suitable for all trays and cell configurations and compatible with all loose fill machines with dibbling systems, it ensures a perfectly centered dibbling hole even when filling and dibbling machines run at high speeds.
Flexistart provides quick and easy in-line changeover to enable just-in-time production. When in-line machines create a dibble in Flexistart, that dibble holds for automated seed and cutting systems. Automated systems equipped with any in-line automated sticking equipment can run up to twice as fast with Flexistart.
In addition, Flexistart’s physical and chemical properties create a beneficial growing environment that promotes strong root growth and structure and encourages overall plant health. When Flexistart is removed from its cell tray, the substrate remains fully intact.
Trials showed that propagators using Flexistart achieved an increase in deliverable trays per hour—and that the substrate performed favorably to the control in root development, flower count, and plant uniformity.
